ASKQANCE 2016–A round-up

The semifinals and finals of MegaWhats 2016 – the national flagship team quizzing championship of the KQA took place on Day 1 of asKQAnce 2016.

The first semis saw a close fight ending in a tiebreaker between two teams with Metaquizziks from Bangalore eventually prevailing over the Travelling Pillsburys from Mumbai. They joined the top three teams from this semi, Ingit Bergman – Mumbai, Swami and Friends – Hyderabad and We Are Like This Wonly – Bangalore.

In the second semifinal QED-Chennai won, with Remembrance of Things Fast-Chennai a close second. Matunga Manram-Mumbai finished third and Aardvarks-Delhi pipped a couple of other teams to take fourth place.

After a riveting final, there was a new champion – Remembrance of Things Fast – Chennai, represented by Navin Rajaram, Kiran Vijayakumar, Srinath Bashyam and Manu Sudhakar.

QED from Chennai with Samanth, Sankhya, Gopal and Jayakanthan finished second.
Waltwo from Bangalore with Thejaswi, Anustup, Arun and Ochintya finished third.

The quiz was set by Mitesh Agarwal and Venkatesh Srinivasan.

The @Knappily India Quiz was conducted on Saturday, 25 June 2016 by Ochintya Sharma and Alagarsamy AP. After a closely fought prelims, the following eight teams made it to the finals with these final standings:

Double Sculls – the written sports quiz was conducted on Saturday, 25 June 2016 by Ashwin Kumar and Rajagopal PS. The quiz had a huge turnout and teams attempted 45 questions in writing.
After a close finish, the podium finishers were:

Runners-up – Vinoo Sanjay and Atul Mathew
3rd Place – Sankhya and Sreeram

The movies quiz at ASKQANCE 2016 – Son of Lumiere was conducted on Day II of Askqance by Santosh Swaminathan and Anustup Datta. The marathon quiz with loads of movie clips from multiple language films went on till the wee hours of the night and in the end, the top three were:

Winners – Metaquizziks – Varun, Priyambad, Ashwin and Shiv
Runners-up – QED – Samanth, Jayakanthan, Gopal and TKB
3rd Place – Mavericks – Ramkey, Dr Chandrashekar, Nikhil and Atul

Day 3 at ASKQANCE 2016 started with Collected Works – the Arts Quiz by Varun Rajiv and Vivek Karthikeyan. After a 30-questions prelims, which was well enjoyed and cracked by the teams, the Top eight teams made it to the final, with QED from Chennai coming out trumps, at the end of the finals. There was a tie-break for second spot, in which Remembrance of Things Fast pipped Matunga Manram to second place.

The flagship General Quiz at Askqance – Sesame, saw a huge number of teams attempt the prelims (nearly 50 teams). After a tightly contested 40-questions prelims, a long finals began – a quiz in two halves, respectively by Thejaswi Udupa and Arul Mani.

After 75+ questions in the finals, there was a tie between two teams – The Travelling Pillsburys from Mumbai and QED from Chennai – the tie was resolved after the second tie-breaker question and QED emerged champions.
The final standings were:

2nd Place – The Travelling Pillsburys – 385
3rd Place – Matunga Manram – 370

The three-day quiz festival ended with the fun-AJM quiz. Despite the late start, almost 50 people stayed back – a mix of Bangaloreans and outstation quizzers. Beginning with a twin List-It round, Sai Ganesh, Kaustuba Venugopal and Abhishek Upadhya, regaled the participants with some fun questions, PJs and fantastic fundas.
The quiz ended with two large teams of about 20 people each, and much chaos on the pounce! The team which had Jayakanthan R and Rajagopal PS among others won the quiz, as the event wound up post 10 PM on Sunday.Thanks to everyone who stayed back and to the QMs for a very interesting and fun quiz – the perfect way to end the fest.

The Wing Commander G.R. Mulky Memorial Quiz

The 11th edition of the Wing Commander GR Mulky Memorial Quiz will be held on Sunday, 12 June 2016, at the Canara Union, 8th Main Road, Malleswaram, Bangalore 56003.

This is an annual event held in memory of the man who founded and almost single-handedly ran the activities of the Karnataka Quiz Association from 1983 to 2000.

World Quizzing Championships on Saturday 4 June 2016

The 2016 edition of the World Quizzing Championships will be held in Bangalore on Saturday, 4 June 2016. The venue is the Command Hospital Auditorium, Bangalore. As this is part of an Air Force campus, it is advised that you carry some form of ID with you. Also note that the entrance to Command Hospital will be from Cambridge Road and not HAL Airport Road.

The event will commence at 3 pm, and requires the taker to attempt two packs of questions. Each pack contains four topics, and the taker is allowed an hour in which to attempt the questions–thus two hours for writing, and an extra hour for corrections and so on. The quiz is open to solo contestants, of all ages.

KQA will provide prizes for the top 5 finishers in the Open category,  and top 2 finishers in College, School (up to Std XII) and Ladies categories. In addition, each of the eight topic winners will get a book coupon. An entry fee will be collected at the venue to recover photocopying costs.

Norwegian Open 2016

The  Norwegian Open Quiz will be held on Saturday 2 April 2016.
Time: 11am start.
Venue: H-302, Third Floor, Humanities Block, St. Joseph’s College, Langford Road, Bangalore.
 
The Norwegian Open Quiz is an annual solo quiz in written form, set by the venerable Tore Dahl, and is great fun, especially when you scratch your head for the most Polish-sounding name you can think of, come up with Zbigniew Cybulski, and find out 30 minutes later that this, indeed, is the answer.
 
The quiz will consist of 250 questions – all counting – divided into 10 categories, 5 categories in each half of the quiz.
 
This year’s edition will be proctored by Nagaratna Patil whose nickname Partikal should alert you the fact that she is always on time.
 
Start 11 am. Should be done by 1:30 pm, inclusive of corrections.
KQA will give out prizes, as usual, for top five scores, and prizes for best school, college and lady entrants.
 
There will be an entry fee of Rs. 100 per person to cover costs. Please register beforehand, as this allows us to make just the right number of photocopies. And to organise seating. Register at:

The fifth Pushups for Muscular Success will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, 19 March 2016, at the Humanities Block (III Floor), St. Joseph’s College, Langford Road.

For those who are wondering what all this is about, the Push-ups are a set of 75 questions which you answer in writing in 60 minutes. The Push-ups were thought up as a way of getting people interested in solo quizzing, and in taking part regularly in a short quizzing activity that involves some intelligent guesswork.

Pushups for Muscular Success on Tuesday, 26 Jan 2016

The third Pushups for Muscular Success will be held at the Humanities Block (III Floor), St. Joseph’s College, Langford Road. We’re pushing the Pushups forward to accommodate those who wish to take part in IIM-Bangalore’s Open Quiz on Saturday afternoon.
 
Please turn up at 11 am for a 20-minute warm-up session followed by the Pushups which will feature, as usual, 75 questions to be answered in writing in 60 minutes. The Pushups are for solo entrants. The questions and the scores will be posted here by end-January since Pushups are about sweating it, real time.

Quizzes on Sunday, 24 Jan 2016

This Sunday, the 24th of January 2016, KQA will hold two open quizzes at the offices of Ujjivan Financial Services in Koramangala.

At 2 pm, we will have the seventh edition of Chronosynclastic Infundibulum, an annual affair where Thejaswi Udupa goads people to read more genre fiction. This will be a written quiz for teams of two. There will be prizes for the top 5 teams.

At 4 pm, Ochintya Sharma will make a long pending return to the stage and conduct an Open Quiz for teams of four. There will be prizes for all finalists.

Finish all your Sunday-things in the morning, and turn up for an afternoon of lazy and fun quizzing. See you at Ujjivan!
