Some of us at KQA would like to compliment the quiz-masters on their choice of title, particularly for the neat insertion of the highly distracting term ‘clean’.

Event II
Pilferages

And what the duck is that? Largely a case of Life imitating Art. After someone made a crack about Persiflage being Persiflage last year on the Good Book online (aka AJM) , and somebody else pointed out that Pilferages was a neat anagram for the title, we decided that we should have two book quizzes going in opposite directions on the same day.

ASKQANCE 2012 – Day 3 Results

AWARDS

The Wing Commander G.R. Mulky Memorial Trophy for Quizzing Excellence was presented to Ms. Jayashree Jayakar Mohanka from Kolkata for being the top scorer in Mahaquizzer 2012. Ms. Mohanka has been consistently among the top few scores for the past few years and her winning the trophy this year also makes her the first lady to win it in the short history of Mahaquizzer.

The KQA Founders’ Trophy was presented to QED (Jayakanthan, Samanth S, Gopal Kidao & Swaminathan G) from Chennai, the team that won the finals of Mega-Whats held on June 30.

SESAME, OPEN! QUIZ

QM: Arul Mani

The annual open quiz held at ASKQANCE sees participation from the best teams from across the country and so the prelims are not just high scoring but also hard fought for the 8 places in the finals. The final line up this year had teams from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore with a team from Goa just missing the qualification mark.

The finals proved to be both interesting in content and exciting in competition as teams frequently changed places in the scoring. Metaquizziks (Varun Rajiv, Mitesh Agarwal, Santosh Swaminathan & Kiran Vijaykumar) from Bangalore overtook QED early in the quiz but then slumped for a while before finally finishing second. QED, the eventual winners lagged for a bit too but then pounced on a series of questions in the fourth round to create and unassailable lead. We Are Like This Wonly (Movin Miranda, Anustup Datta, Ochintya Sharma and Thejaswi Udupa) from Bangalore who were placed last for a couple of rounds bounced back spectacularly towards the end of the quiz to pip the Kolkata team Hammer and Tongs (Kinshuk Biswas, Jayashree Jayakar Mohanka, Shouvik Guha & Anil Vaswani) by 5 points for third place.

Click the graph below for an idea of how the teams’ scores progressed through the quiz.

MEGA-WHATS FACE OFF

QMs: Arul Mani & Kiran Vijaykumar

After a short break for tea and snacks, quizzers poured into the hall to witness the finals of Mega-Whats. With teams from Kolkata, Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Bangalore & Delhi, it had a truly national flavour.

QED, a team from Chennai took an early large lead and kept it through the quiz to win by very large margin. This didn’t mean there was no excitement at all; The teams in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places though frequently exchanged places as the quiz progressed, and even before the last couple of questions, there was a chance for teams to surge ahead to get 2nd place.

An interesting round on connections where teams could also stake confidence on their answers to take higher points helped some teams get a nice leg up in the scoring.

  1. QED – 390 points.
  2. Insignificant Others – 265 points.
  3. Dilli Ke Thugs – 250 points.
  4. We Are Like This Wonly – 237.5 points.
